Snow crystals form in clouds when the temperature is underneath freezing point. They are created by water droplets freezing on small ice particles. As an ice crystal drops through the cloud it bumps and knocks others and becomes a flake. This process of bumping others, along with a little melting and re-freezing, aids the creation of their complex design. They have many different forms; some researchers use as many as 35 shapes to identify them. The most used forms are: plates, stellar crystals, columns, needles, spatial dendrites, capped columns, and irregular forms. An amazing fact is that they always have six sides, and, similar to the human fingerprint, it is thought that no two of them are ever exactly the same. The world's largest flake to date found was 38 centimeters wide and 20 centimeters thick, at Fort Keogh, Montana, USA on 28 January 1887.They are often a traditional seasonal image/motif used around the Christmas period, especially in Europe and the United States, representing the traditional “White Christmas”. During this period it is quite popular to make paper flakes by folding a piece of paper several times, cutting out a pattern with scissors and then unfolding it.They are also often used as symbols representing winter or cold conditions - for example, snow tires which enhance traction during harsh winter driving conditions are labeled with one on the mountain symbol. They also were the symbol of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
